For Pete's sake (pardon the pun), don't go investing a million bucks on rockhounding equipment just yet! Rockhounding equipment doesn't vary too much off the list of gold prospecting. So here's a good list to start with:

The bottom line is this, pack just like you were goin' camping in the woods. ALWAYS have yer' safety gear! Trust me! Remember to pack in and out. Fill any holes you dig and always be aware of yer' surroundings. Gem and rock huntin' ain't always a walk in the park
Rockhound Gear Suggestions
- Rockhammer (Estwing carries a good selection of hammers)
- Set of assorted chisels
- Classifier screens, like the kind that go over 5 gallon buckets
- Spray water bottle to wet your rocks and get some of the mud off
- Rock Lernin' book with some pictures to identify yer' rocks
- Pair of sunglasses, UV rays are a killer and these protect your eyes
- First aid in yer' truck and plenty of food and water
- I use ziplock bags in my backpack to store and separate my stones
